Irish Hare – Gra dilseacht cairdeas
Irish threepence – Irish double hare Recycled threepence Coins
The three-pence coin was a pre-decimal coin worth 1/80 of an Irish pound. The Irish name (leath reul) literally meant “half reul”, the reul being a sixpence coin worth the same as the Spanish real.. Grá Dílseacht Cairdeas means Love Loyalty Friendship and these words are usually associated with the famous and romantic Claddagh Ring.
I have created this wonderful eco-conscious, Love Loyalty Friendship, two coin fusion from a pair of Irish threepence coins. It is a tricky design to successfully make but one which is very special when finished. The origins of the necklace are clearly visible and the design is very striking. I hand-cut and carve it. I use traditional hand saws, chisels and files, in order to give the piece the true English-traditional flare. This process allows me to have a close connection to each piece. Each one of these lovely double Irish Hare three pence pieces is totally hand cut, hand carved with traditional flourish scrolls and recycled, green in more ways than one!
